The nano-plague might have rewritten DNA, but language isn't genetic, it's learned. So, when someone who speaks Japanese turns into some sort of mythical creature, that mythical creature still speaks Japanese. Of course, 10,000 years have passed and societies have moved around, so it's uncertain as to how close their descended Japanese will be to our modern Japanese ('''Hint:''' in the spirit of the books, it will be different, but generally understandable. Think back to reading the Canterbury Tales - it's English, just weird).

It is a world inhabited by fantasy creatures, magic, and mystery.
