Overview

The Ruin is the name given to our world after the nano-plague has transformed it. In the first book, Forgotten Ruin, the soldiers arrive approximately 10,000 years into the future. However, as the book progresses, it is revealed that several other teams arrived at different points in time before them.

Of course, your characters know none of this this, and will find it out in bits and pieces, over the course of the game. The world has undergone tectonic shifts, several planet killer asteroid strikes, and has seen the rise and fall of several civilizations. It is a world inhabited by fantasy creatures, magic, and mystery.

Keeping the mystery

Initially, neither the players nor the characters will know:

  • Where you are
  • When you are

It will be up to the players to figure this out as the campaign progresses.

A note on languages

The nano-plague might have rewritten DNA, but language isn't genetic, it's learned. So, when someone who speaks Japanese turns into some sort of mythical creature, that mythical creature still speaks Japanese. Of course, thousands of years have passed and societies have moved around, so it's uncertain as to how close their descended Japanese will be to our modern Japanese (Hint: in the spirit of the books, it will be different, but generally understandable. Think back to reading the Canterbury Tales - it's English, just weird).
