What players should expect...

... about me

  1. I endeavor to be a "yes and" GM - As long as an idea doesn't run wildly contrary to the game rules and world, try it. There is a limit to how far out I'll let you go (for example, you're not going to be able to light a fart on fire and use the resulting thrust to shoot over the castle wall - physics just doesn't work that way), but if you want to play a race that doesn't yet exist, or invent some spell, just ask. As long as it's not game-breaky, I'll roll with it, and rule of cool.. err. rules.
  2. I favor ad-hoc collaborative world building - The world of the Latter Earth is a vast and wondrous place, and much of what is known is highly localized - though there are legends, explorers, and the like. Players should feel encouraged to make reasonable declarations about corners of the world with which their characters are likely to be familiar. (Hint: The Know skill is especially useful in this regard. You make a declaration about something that is, I call for an Int/Know check and, if you succeed, you are correct. Get it wrong, however, and it might lead to a... misunderstanding.
  3. I blatantly rip off other media - This means movies, books, and the like. If you recognize it, great, you'll get a chuckle. However, it would be foolish to expect anything based on this knowledge. Just because you're transporting a cargo hold full of booze and see a lady in a dress on an island does not mean that she is a runaway bride pursued by a county sheriff - she may very well be a succubus trying to feed off your crew.

... about this game

  1. This game is intended to be lighthearted swashbuckling adventure - Apart from the murder hobo nature of many roleplaying games (which is all good natured violence), we're going to be steering clear of darker topics such as excessive torture, rape, and victimization of children. If someone is hurting kids, you can be assured that they are the baddies, and you are morally justified in saving the kids.
  2. But, I also like moral conflict and ambiguity - What if human sacrifice is necessary to appease some ancient beast? Remember Torchwood, where Captain Jack allowed his grandson to die to save the whole planet (try watching that one with your wife when she's 7 months pregnant....)? Or that Star Trek where the anointed kid is installed in the depths of the city in order to keep the whole society working. These are dilemmas that always interest me.
  3. Baddies are never just evil - I'm pretty sure Hitler thought he was doing the right thing (at least for Germany). Similarly, people in this world will almost always be rational actors - from a certain point of view. This point of view may be utterly foreign to you because you lack their cultural references (in some cases because we're dealing with literal aliens), but it does exist.
